HOMOPHOBIA

Two spirits were faced with many obstacles, including homophobia. Homophobia is the prejudice and mistreatment towards homosexual people or anyone from the LGBT community.

What is homophobia?

In western civilizations, such as Europe, homophobia derived from Christian beliefs. Homosexuality was frowned upon and considered to be a sin. This was spread across the world as Europeans began to colonize the world.

How was homophobia used against Native Americans?

European settlers used homophobia as a weapon against the Native Americans. It not only benefited them to accomplish the physical genocide of the American Indians but also the emotional and cultural genocide. This form of emotional warfare marginalized the American Indians and banished their culture from the map.

Some forms that Europeans displayed homophobia was through their religion. Europeans used christianity to try and make Native Americans feel as if who they are was wrong.

“ The resulting tension, then could be resolved... only by being played out against...the natural world and its natural peoples... the only way the people of Christian Europe ultimately could live with the reality of the Noble Savage in the Golden World was to transform into the Noble Savage in the Hideous Wilderness.”

The Europeans viewed Native Americans as less than human and wated to potray that through their actions and beliefs.
